Why 1984 is Still Relevant Today

George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984 was certainly ahead of its time. First published in 1949, its grim vision of perpetual war and continuous government surveillance made bold predictions not just about the state of the world but about language and technology, some of which have come to pass in one way or another. More surprising still is just how relevant much of the novel remains today, and here are just three of the reasons why.

Social media has become Big Brother. Our every action is being monitored, but rather than being surrounded by cameras we are willingly giving away all of this information through social media, making it very much like Big Brother without us even realising.

Alternative facts act like The Ministry of Truth. It may not be necessary to redact and revise history as was done in The Ministry of Truth, “alternative facts” are often taken for fact in our modern media landscape, achieving the same effect with none of the work.

We are still at war with an unseen enemy. From the war on drugs to the war against terror, wars are continuously being fought on a global scale but most of us, particularly North-Americans, will never see any of that conflict in person, meaning that any information about said war or the enemy is provided to us solely by our governments and corporate-controlled media outlets.
